Having a hard time finding a therapist who is a good fit? Read below:
So, you’ve decided to find a therapist. Good for you! Finding support is important and if you follow my three tips you will be able to find the best therapist for you. Connecting with a therapist is essential for you to get the most out of therapy. Therapy relies on your ability to open up and be vulnerable. If you don’t feel safe or comfortable to open up to your therapist, you won’t be able to experience the growth you want. Whether this is your first or fifth time searching for a therapist, take a few extra steps to find a therapist who is the best fit for you!
Tip 1: Decide Who You Can Connect With
There are several different types of therapists out there with their own personality and methods. Some are laid-back, confrontative, structured, or free flowing. Some therapists specialize in working with different populations like LGBTQIA+ or BIPOC. The more you reflect on what you are looking for the better chance you have of finding a therapist that best meets your needs.
Tip 2: Take Some Time to Explore Your Options
You’ve reflected and have chosen the kind of therapist that you can really connect with. The next step is to find one! The easiest and more common way of finding a therapist is on the internet. Googling “therapist near me” can bring up results, but I recommend trying a platform like Psychology Today where you search based on insurance, gender, price, language preference, and specialty. Psychology today also shows you which therapists in your area are offering online therapy. Additionally, you can reach out to your Primary Care Provider for a list of therapists in your area.
Tips 3: Ask For a Consultation Call
Alright, you’ve reflected on what type of therapist is best for you and found a therapist that you think would be a good fit. I think the best way to find a therapist you can connect with is to have a consultation call. A consultation call is an opportunity for you ask the therapist questions about their methods and see if they are the right type of therapist for you (refer to tip #1). Keep in mind that not all therapists offer consultation calls but I would highly recommend taking a therapist up on the offer if you are interested in them.
